WAVE Fellows Undergraduate Research Program

The WAVE Fellows program provides support for talented undergraduates intent on pursuing a Ph.D. to conduct a 10-week summer research project at Caltech.
The WAVE Fellows program aims to foster diversity by increasing the participation of underrepresented students in science and engineering Ph.D. programs and to make Caltech's programs more visible and accessible to students not traditionally exposed to Caltech. The program is extended, but not limited, to racially-minoritized students, women in certain fields, first-generation college students, geographically underrepresented students, educationally and financially disadvantaged students, and students with disabilities.
Eligibility: Students must be current sophomores through non-graduating seniors and must be U.S. citizens, U.S. permanent residents, or students with DACA status. A minimum GPA of 3.2 is required.
Competitive applicants will have completed sophomore-level courses in desired research field, have demonstrated through academic and/or co-curricular activities a passion for research, and can articulate how their research interests align with Caltech's research areas. The most competitive applicants will have prior research experience.
Support: WAVE Fellows will receive a $7,100 award for the ten-week program. An additional $2,000 on-campus housing supplement and $300 travel supplement will be provided.

AMGEN Scholars Program

Caltech's Amgen Scholars Program is geared towards students in biology, chemistry, and biotechnology fields. Some of these fields include biology, biochemistry, bioengineering, medical engineering, chemical and biomolecular engineering, and chemistry.
Eligibility: Students must be current sophomores through non-graduating seniors, must be attending a four-year university in the US or US territory at time of application, and must be U.S. citizens, U.S. permanent residents, or students with DACA status. A minimum GPA of 3.2 is required.
Support: Amgen Scholars will receive a $7,100 award, round-trip air transportation, and campus housing.

The UC Center Sacramento announces its sixth annual Emerging Scholars Award for Excellence in Research and Public Policy. The award will recognize excellence in graduate student research with a direct impact on public policy. Announcing UCSD Student Applications for IDEA LAB Spring 2021
In collaboration with UC San Diego The Design Lab and The Basement, the Idea Lab is a quarter-long foundational program designed to introduce students to the ideas of design thinking and how it complements entrepreneurship through hands-on experiences and collaborative work with students from a variety of academic disciplines, backgrounds, and perspectives.  This program is ideal for both students who want to learn about design thinking and for students who need help getting “unstuck” from their current problem space.  Participants who successfully complete the program requirements of the Idea Lab may have the option to continue their journey with a focus on entrepreneurship in The Basement’s Summer Converge Program.

At the UC San Diego Design Lab, design is a way of thinking. Our scholars focus on the interaction of people and technology, treating issues as systems to solve problems related to everyday events, industrial organization, products, services, routines and structures.
Don Norman has inspired generations of designers to work across disciplines to seek solutions. Since 1966, Don has been a faculty member in the Departments of Psychology, Cognitive Science, and Electrical and Computer Engineering. In honor of his tenure as director and the groundbreaking center he created, we are celebrating the Design Lab’s legacy of leading-edge, human-centered design.
The Design Lab is hosting a virtual event to showcase the stellar work of our students and faculty. Even in the face of an ongoing global pandemic, our scholars have found new ways to collaborate, discover and innovate.

The Ina Coolbrith Memorial Poetry Prize

The Ina Coolbrith Memorial Poetry Prize is awarded for the best unpublished poem or group of poems by a UC undergraduate student. Each participating school may submit three finalists to UC Berkeley to compete. Approximately $1,100 is available annually for prizes. The UCSD Department of Literature is now accepting campus submissions, entries must be submitted to the Literature Undergraduate Office, Room 110 Literature Building, by 12:00 p.m. on Friday, December 6th, 2019.


Fossil Fuel Authoritarianism

Climate Change, Carbon Economics and the Rise of the Far Right. This teach-in seeks to understand the geopolitics of what we are calling ‘fossil fuel authoritarianism.’ The goal is to gain a better understanding of the dangerous affinity that so many of the new far right governments have for anti-environmentalism. The workshop will take place on Friday, January 31st, 2020 from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm in the Malamud Room at the Institute of the Americas.

Abstracts for Research/Conference Papers

Abstracts - so tiny, yet so dense with information! In this workshop, we will review abstracts as a genre of academic writing, unpacking what each sentence in an abstract does for the reader. Together, we will read sample abstracts to discern their key features, and participants will have time to work on an abstract for a current project. Taking place on November 15th, 10 am to 1 pm.


Research Proposals Workshop

Workshop will explore strong principles that inform all research proposals, regardless of discipline. In this workshop series, we will explore strategies and tactics for developing your research topic into an effective proposal. We will discuss strategies for constructing a research puzzle from existing literature and the kinds of rhetorical moves that lead the reader to your research question. Taking place on November 8th, 10 am to 1 pm.


Style and Clarity in Academic Writing

Strategies for writing impactful prose that resonates with your audience, plus time to work on a draft. In this workshop, we will explore concrete strategies for maximizing the clarity of your writing. We will address common misconceptions about "good" style and learn how to fit style improvements into the writing process. Taking place on November 1st, 10 am to 1 pm.


Espresso 2019 Startup Expo Session

Espresso is a Startup Expo Session that takes place during our annual hackathon, SD Hacks. Design Frontiers is an event consisting of a design sprint and accompanying lightning talks. The event will increase cross collaboration of students across multiple disciplines, and show UC San Diego students, through a hands on experience, how user centered design can apply to various fields.


CodePath University Demo Day

Students in the iOS bootcamp sponsored by CodePath will be having a Demo Day. This rigorous bootcamp has had students learn swift and iOS development through direct implementations of applications such as Flix, Twitter, and Instagram. They will be presenting their final projects on May 25 in the PC Theater West from 4:00 to 6:00 pm!


CGIU + IBM Hackathon!

The hackathon is being organized in collaboration with IBM and CGI University, and aims to develop tech solutions to address global disaster response and recovery efforts. Starting Friday, May 17 at 4:00 pm concluding on Saturday, May 18, 2019 4:00 pm at University of California, San Diego: MET Auditorium, School of Medicine.

Remembering Jeff Elman

Last month, we commemorated the life of our dear friend and colleague, Jeff Elman, with a memorial service at UC San Diego. Many of you participated and many others expressed their support from afar. It is with great and wrenching sadness that we announce the passing of Distinguished Professor of Cognitive Science Jeffrey L. Elman, who died suddenly on Thursday, June 28. He was 70. A campus-wide Celebration of Life memorial will take place in the Fall -- details to come.

Design Frontiers: Healthcare

Design at UCSD is bringing to you Design Frontiers: Healthcare, a day-long design sprint and lightning talks on May 20 at 10am in the Qualcomm Room, Jacobs School of Engineering, featuring speakers from Illumina focusing on applying human-centered design to the field of healthcare. This is an effort to increase cross collaboration of students across multiple disciplines, and show UC San Diego students through hands-on experience how design thinking can be applied to topics beyond product and UX/UI design. Cognitive Science Student Comes to Aid of Elderly Woman

On Saturday, April 21, 2018, Cognitive Science student Andrew Washington (along with mechanical engineering students Roland Ho and Bicky Lenh) discovered a disoriented elderly woman very close to the canyon rim on the north side of EBU 1. Had Andrew not stayed with the woman, Patrol Sergeant Scott Gustafson believes she may have wandered into the canyon where she could have been injured or further lost in the brush. The Cognitive Science Department would like to recognize Andrew for his outstanding actions and show of compassion that may have saved this woman’s life.

Join the Department of Literature’s annual writing competitions, open to all UCSD undergraduates: the Stewart Prize in Poetry ($300 prize) and the Dr. Milton H. Saier, Sr. Memorial Award in Fiction ($1,000 prize). You may submit up to 5 poems for the Stewart Prize (but your entry will be judged as a collection, not separate pieces) and one piece of fiction (15 pages max) for the Saier Award. Professor Eran Mukamel on Salk team awarded $25 Million for Brain Atlas

UC San Diego researchers, including Eran Mukamel of Cognitive Science, will participate in the project led by Salk to identify cell types in the mammalian brain. The project is funded by the National Institutes of Health as part of the federal BRAIN Initiative.

IBM awarded $10 million to Virginia de Sa and co-PIs in the Computer Science Department with co-investigators Marta Kutas, Andrea Chiba, Federico Rossano and David Kirsh from CogSci and others from CSE, to find better ways to prevent the symptoms of aging and allow individuals live in their homes independently for longer.

Cohen, Simons, and Marcus Fellowships at the Marcus Autism Center

The Marcus Autism Center, in conjunction with the Emory University School of Medicine and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, is offering four fellowships: the Cohen Fellowship in Developmental Social Neuroscience, the Marcus Fellowship in Speech Science and Engineering, the Simons Fellowship in Computational Neuroscience, and the Simons Fellowship in Design Engineering. Andrea Chiba, associate professor of cognitive science, for “Socially Situated Neuroscience: Creating a Suite of Tools for Studying Sociality and Interoception.” “The “interoceptive” system is said to be a neural system that is critical to our physiological self-awareness and the feelings we share with others,” said Chiba.“This project aims to co-develop light, wireless, flexible recording sensors, an iRat (a robotic ‘animat’ with rat-like social behavior) and a set of experiments to interrogate the ‘interoceptive system’ by simultaneously examining physiological measures, neural activity and complex social behavior.” Primary researchers on the grant, in addition to Chiba, are Laleh Quinn, Todd Coleman and Marcelo Aguilar-Rivera of UC San Diego and Janet Wiles of the University of Queensland Australia.

Undergraduates interested in receiving research training in computational neuroscience are encouraged to apply to an NIH-sponsored summer program at the Center for the Neural Basis of Cognition in Pittsburgh. The Center for the Neural Basis of Cognition is a joint interdisciplinary program of Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh. The 2014 program will *tentatively* run from May 27 through August 1, 2014. The final deadline for application is Feb 11. All participants must be United States citizens or permanent residents, must be enrolled at a 4-year accredited institution, and must be in their sophomore or junior year at the time of application. Any undergraduate may apply, but we are especially interested in attracting students with strong quantitative backgrounds with some experience in calculus, statistics and/or computer programming. The Foundation for Learning Equality (FLE) is a non-profit organization dedicated to creating tools for sharing and authoring open-licensed educational content for use by anyone around the world, with a focus on reaching those with limited or no internet access. We're looking for software development interns to volunteer with us this summer to help expand the KA Lite project, a lightweight web app for serving core Khan Academy content (videos and exercises) without needing internet connectivity, from a local server (even a Raspberry Pi!). The internship will take place around the UCSD campus, but can also be done remotely (we have developers around the world). Starting this Fall, the Wa will meet Mondays at 12 noon for an hour of impassioned intellectual camaraderie. Talks will range from informal brown-bag discussions to well-advertised Colloquium Talks. Speakers may present talks they've already delivered elsewhere, practice talks for upcoming conferences, in-progress studies in need of feedback, or off-the-wall theoretical proposals. All are encouraged to speak: faculty, visiting scholars, post-docs, and graduate students.

To get things started, we will meet biweekly in the Fall quarter. The first Wa speaker will be Prof. Ed Hutchins, on Monday, October 11, 12-1 p.m., in CSB 180. Let's pack the room, and have a vigorous discussion! The Wa will meet every other week after the 11th, with talks by Prof. Sarah Creel, Prof. Rafael Núñez, and Leo Trottier.

Professor Seana Coulson receives stimulus funding to study gesture in communication

Seana Coulson, who studies language, received funding to study how gestures are used in communication. Coulson will measure volunteers' brain activity while they watch videos of people talking about the size and shape of objects to see whether they respond more when gestures are used.

The IUJCS is a peer-reviewed, online journal of writing in cognitive science. The journal is currently accepting submissions of original work by undergraduate students in cognitive science and related disciplines. Submissions may originate from any field within cognitive science including, but not limited to: artificial intelligence, anthropology, biology, computer science, linguistics, logic, philosophy, psychology, and neuroscience. Professor Jean Mandler to receive APA Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award

Cognitive Science professor emeritus Jean Mandler has been selected as a recipient of the 2007 American Psychological Association (APA) Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award. As the history of this award indicates, it is an outstanding accolade for scientific achievement. An announcement of all APA award recipients will be printed in the March 2007 APA Monitor.

Jeff Elman Wins $100k Rumelhart Prize

Jeff Elman, a distinguished professor in our own department of Cognitive Science here at UCSD, has been been named the 2007 recipient of the David E. Rumelhart Prize. Elman is the seventh winner of the annual award which is given for outstanding contributions to the foundations of cognitive science.
